Hi lovely! Welcome to the Boudoir Bombshell Book Club! A good book is truly a treasure, whether you are curled up on a Sunday afternoon with a book and a mug of coffee, or reading on your tablet while riding the subway to work. Many of us like to make New Year’s resolutions to read more, yes?
Speaking of resolutions, another popular one this time of year is to take better care of ourselves. Maybe you’ve gotten yourself a gym membership to help you meet this goal, but what you really need is… a library card! There are some amazing books out there that will help you learn to love and accept yourself regardless of where you are in your life. And if you’re here, thinking about booking a boudoir photoshoot to celebrate the beautiful human woman you are, discovering positive and life-affirming stories is like making a close female friend. Finally, that little negative voice in the back of our minds is replaced with loving and kind words. What an amazing relief. If there’s no time in your day for sitting down with a book (for example, when you’re driving), consider audiobooks.
Books for Boudoir Bombshells
You are Not a Before Picture, by Alex Light. Life does not magically become perfect once we lose weight. Light’s book helps readers challenge their underlying beliefs that their bodies are forever in need of improvement. The weight stigma leads to eating disorders, not improved health or happiness, according to Light, who has a background in beauty and fashion journalism and who herself has struggled with disordered eating.
In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice From Over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs by Grace Bonney. Bonney shares the stories of over 100 diverse women from around the world–from media giants to fashion houses to painters and poets–who show us all that we can accomplish if we support one another. The women featured in Bonney’s collection have “overcome adversity, gone great distances on their own, and learned the power of working together to achieve their goals,” writes Bonney. “In many cases, they have inspired one another, and they are role models for the generation to come.”
Yoke: My Yoga of Self-Acceptance, by Jessamyn Stanley. The Sanskrit word “yoga” means “to yoke,” that is, to join together. Stanley discusses how yoga is then defined as a way to join together–or to yoke–the body, mind, and spirit in the pursuit of balance. Using a series of essays, Stanley shows how her yoga practice has enabled her to link her light moments and dark times, good and bad, light and dark, ups and downs. In this way, she says, the lessons we learn in the practice of yoga can be applied to our everyday lives and allow us to live more mindfully.
Badass Affirmations: The Wit and Wisdom of Wild Women, by Becca Anderson. Even the most mindful and well-adjusted women need a little boost every now and then. When you find yourself in need of an attitude adjustment, this collection of affirmations might be exactly what you need to remember how awesome you are! In addition to affirmations from women all over the world, Anderson includes biographies of inspirational women including Gloria Steinem, Frida Kahlo, and Shirley Chisholm. Finally, the book features journal prompts you can do to improve your confidence.
